I think at one point or another we have all come across project baskets like this and have been saddened about thier disrepair. How to fix them back up again. I’ll walk you through how I fixed up my own and the pattern for remaking your own. There will also be some ideas on how to remake your own basket: How to deconstruct the fabric and make a pattern from it.
Book Review::The Art of Paper Cutting
Quarry books sent me this wonderful book and when I received it in the mail I was so excited to dig right in. I really love the author’s path in her life - from painter to paper cutting - which seems so similar to my own - from painting to fibers. I just really related to her. Her style is beautiful and draws on the cultural practices of paper cutting from around the world.
“Henya Michson began her career in art with sketching, drawing, and painting before she was inspired to begin papercutting. This path has led her to museum, solo and group exhibitions across the wolrd, and into the Guild of American Paper cutters. Her inspiration ranges from religion and tradition to nature and poetry. She has been a papercut artist for over 20 years.”
You can get The Art of Papercutting here, go to Quarry Book’s website to see and read about some of their other great publications.

Knitting Basket Breakdown :: Part III
I was planning on getting this posted yesterday, but it took 6 hours of handwork on this great little guy and it’s was around 12:30 when I finished up. I thought it would just be like 2 hours of hand sewing, oh how I underestimate things like that. So here I am next day, haha. And TA DA! Done! Isn’t it cute!
I found this great fabric in my stash that I think is actually from the 70’s and then the liner is an old table cloth. It was a really neat construction method actually and I was able to do machine sew the liner completely. You see the pockets are done like this:

Maker’s Faire :: Come Sew with Me!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’m happy to share the great news with you that
Craft Leftovers and the Sewing Rebellion will be co-hosting a workshop at the Maker’s Faire!
It will be all about mending, learning to sew, making sewn projects! There will be demos every hour on sewing and mending skills. Stop by any time to ask Sewing Questions, work on a project, or check out a demo! There will be fabric, buttons, sewing machines all provided, but feel free to bring your own project to work on too! Think of it as a Sewing Rebellion at the Maker’s Faire with some Craft Leftovers thrown into the mix - patterns and how to’s, leftover sewing materials on site to play with.
It will be such a great time! I hope to see you there if you are in the area and plan on going to the faire. It is not to be missed, that is for sure!
I do need your help though to make this workshop at the Maker’s Faire a Success!
There are many ways you can help:
1. Zipper Donations - zippers are always in high demand and we will hopefully be using a lot of them, do you have an old zipper or two, or even a whole box? Send them to Craft Leftovers, 217 Welch Ave #101, Ames, IA 50014. I can pay for postage, just email me at kristin[at]craftleftovers[dot]com to arrange shipping. They need to arrive by May 24th.
2. Sewing Machines - if you live in the Bay Area and have an extra machine, we sure could use two more for the workshop - we have two lined up, but two more would be really nice in case we have a break down or (as we hope) more than two people want to be sewing at the same time! Please email me at kristin[at]craftleftovers[dot]com to arrange the pick up/return of your machine in the area.
3. Airfare and lodging - Unfortunately, the fact is that while it’s free to be in the Maker’s Faire, flying and lodging can get pricy and I need all the help I can get actually getting out the Faire and having a place to stay. Oh and does anyone know a good place to stay that’s under $100 a night around/in San Mateo, California - that’s where the Maker’s Faire is technically.
4. Crafting while in town - I’m gong to be in town for a full week after the Faire! Do you want a Craft Leftovers workshop for your craft group? Maybe a Q&A at your sewing shop on mending? What about a trouble shooting at your yarn store or knit group? I would love to meet you, just email me and we can have some crafty fun while I’m on the West Coast. Any good knitting groups I could crash that week and hang out at? Haha. I will miss mine here in Ames :)
5. Ideas! - Like above, I’m going to be in town for a full week after the Faire, what should I do? What’s your favorite Bay Area yarn store, thrift shop, gallery, diy space, that is not to be missed? Any good openings at gallery’s that first week of June? Please please please let me know. Yes I want to go to museums and the zoo - but what are the great little gems of the town that should make sure to get to?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’m so excited and nervous and can’t wait! I hope to see at least a few of you there! Come and introduce yourself - I’ll make some craft leftovers silk screen patches to hand out too, so make sure to get your hands on one while you are there!
Have a good day! See you all on the flip side (tomorrow),
Kristin
Re Release into the wild :: Stash Socks
I really love my stash socks and now that it’s getting warm again, I’ll most likely be making another pair. I’ve been making a lot of market bags lately from Hempathy yarn and have some leftover- perfect for some stash socks for the summer!
You can see the original post here.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’ll see you all later! Have a great weekend and keep it crafty and creative!

Knit Basket Breakdown :: Part 2
I don’t know if any of you remember from awhile ago when I posted about my Knitting Basket and how it’s broken down and I want to fix it. Well, I’ve finally got around to it and thank you so much for all your suggestions!
Miss Woolly’s Mini Cross Stitch Kit
When I went to check my mailbox on Monday I was delighted to find a Cross Stitch kit in the mail! What a pleasant surprise! Barns & Noble is putting out this great kit for their book stores and it’s packed with great goodies. It’s the perfect thing for someone who’s interested in embroidery or someone you are trying to get to love embroidery as much as you and I do, hehe.
Shoe Sensations :: Fixing Button Holes
I’ve had a hard time with shoes because while I don’t like them to be complete plastic, I’m excessively allergic to leather of any kind when it comes to my feet. It’s really bad and I’m not going to share with you a gross foot story. it’s not fun. Enough said. So I avoid leather like the plegue and I don’t mind this so much since I don’t really care for the idea of it anyway. Finding nice dress shoes has been a problem though and when I got the job at Stam I really needed some shoes I could wear to both work and just around in general. I found the perfect pair of shoes though, and I the shoe shop here in town happened to carry them. I love the shoes I purchased from Lazy M Shoes - my Simple shoes. They are hemp with a coconut button clasp, tires for soles, and wool felt for the inner.
I’m starting to have a problem now though with the strap, it’s completely stretching out and the shoes are starting to slip off on a regular basis. A particular pain when I’m walking through a dew soaked field in the morning or when riding my bike and all of a sudden - woops, there goes my shoe. Not fun, not safe.
It’s an easy fix though, just tighten up that strap by moving that button hole up just a touch and making it a bit smaller. This is a common issue for bags with button clasps as well as sweater button holes.

Mending On the Go Kit :: Free Sewing Pattern
“Crap!” And there goes my button. Now only if I had a little pocket kit to carry in my bag so I could quickly attach it before it goes missing. And what about those times you snag your favorite skirt while on vacation? What’s one to do? Well, mending on the go maybe isn’t ideal, but with this little kit you sure can make it a lot easier. Everything right where it needs to be just when you need it. Even some fabric for patches in a pinch and replacement buttons when you can’t find the one you’ve lost.
Happy Birthday… To Me!
Today is my 26th birthday and I didn’t anticipate all the running around that would happen today - special lunch, getting a new driver’s license, going to the garden center, and then just the have to do random things that I can’t talk about because they are top secret even though I really want to. So I wasn’t able to get the pictures done today for the pattern before I lost the sun. I’m going to get up bright and early tomorrow (8am) and take the pictures and post it first thing in the morning. In the meantime I’m going to go grab a funnel cake, a super veggie dog, and a beer.
See you all in the morning!
Kristin
